Pattern & Place: Unraveling Clerkenwell’s Identity
2022 – 2024
This project was born from a deep immersion in the vibrancy of Clerkenwell, London. Living and working amidst its historic streets sparked a curiosity about the intricate connections between its past and present, its architecture and community. I began to recognise patterns – echoes of the past reverberating in the present, threads of shared experience woven through generations.
The journey started with sketching the textures and details of Clerkenwell’s urban fabric, capturing its unique character. It then evolved into contributing to “A History of the Church of Saint James Clerkenwell,” further deepening my understanding of the area’s rich tapestry.
From these explorations emerged a series of community walking tours – a way to share my discoveries and invite others to connect with Clerkenwell’s layered identity. Participants were guided through the streets, uncovering hidden stories and architectural gems. Afterwards, they were encouraged to reflect and express their personal connections to the area through the creation of digital collages, weaving together their own unique perspectives.
“Pattern & Place” celebrates the interconnectedness of history, architecture, and community, inviting you to uncover the hidden patterns that shape Clerkenwell’s identity and discover your own place within the metropolis.
