I was initially commissioned to format and design the book A History of the Church of Saint James Clerkenwell, a publication exploring the living history of the area.
Alongside the book, “Pattern & Place” developed as a connected cultural project. It extended the research beyond print, inviting people to engage directly with Clerkenwell’s history, architecture, and community through guided walks and workshops.
My role
I designed the book from start to finish, shaping its layout, typography and visual structure to support the storytelling.
I then conceived and led “Pattern & Place” – the walking tour and workshop programme, overseeing research, experience design and facilitation.
Approach
The project combined print design with experience design principles.
The book provided a structured and accessible account of the area’s history. The walking tours translated that research into a lived experience, guiding participants through streets, buildings and significant pubs.
Each tour concluded with a facilitated workshop where participants reflected on their own connection to the area through collage and storytelling. Partnerships with local businesses helped root the experience in the community itself.
Outcome
The project resulted in a cohesive body of work across print and live experience.
The publication offered a clear and carefully designed historical resource. The tours and workshops created space for conversation, reflection and shared interpretation.
Together, they strengthened connections between place, story and community.
